1838 No Drapery

1838 is the first year of the new Seated Liberty design by engraver Christian Gobrecht. According to mint records, production of this design began in September leading to the less than average mintage figures. Despite the low mintage the 1838 No Drapery quarter is not rare, and is easily sourced in lower grades. This original design has no drapery from Liberty's gown hanging below her left elbow. Two distinct varieties exist for this date, the eagle on the reverse is seen with both open and closed claws.
